Jerry Mitchell returns in Fatal Thunder, a gripping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Larry Bond
India and Pakistan are stalemated in a war that India launched to "remove the threat of terrorism, once and for all." Without the knowledge of the rest of the Indian government, a small but powerful group of senior military officers and civilian security officials have decided to strike at China, Pakistan's backer and India's recent enemy in the Littoral Alliance War. The conspirators' planned attack will leave Pakistan largely undefended, ensuring the success of India's military campaign.
To conceal the origins of the attack, the group has obtained Russian-made nuclear warheads and torpedos from a renegade Russian arms merchant, which will be delivered covertly by INS Chakra.
Girish Samant, until recently the captain of Chakra, discovers hints of the far-reaching conspiracy and seeks aid from an old enemy, the only person he can trust: skipper of the USS North Dakota, Jerry Mitchell.

In bestseller Bond’s intricate fifth Jerry Mitchell submariner thriller (after 2013’s Shattered Trident), a nuclear detonation in Kashmir threatens to break the fragile Indo-Pakistani cease-fire. U.S. national security advisor Dr. Joanna Patterson determines that the device was not Indian in origin, but was a Soviet-era warhead stolen from an undersea entombment first discovered in 2007’s Dangerous Ground. Russian former naval officers have plundered the site to arm the leaders of an Indian military coup, who are planning to attack targets in China; once they destroy the Chinese capability to protect Pakistan, they can renew the war. Cmdr. Jerry Mitchell of the USS North Dakota, with the help of his former enemies Russian captain Aleksey Petrov and Indian captain Girish Samant, must hunt down the rogue Indian submarine that’s intent on delivering the cataclysmic payload. Bond has a facility with non-American characters, and the diverse all-star cast from earlier novels makes for a stalwart crew. Sound the klaxons and dive in. Agent: Robert Gottlieb, Trident Media.

Bond delivers another solid entry in his submarine commander Jerry Mitchell series, which conveys to readers what it's like to live and work at sea. A nuclear bomb detonates in Kashmir, and immediate concerns of a conflict between India and Pakistan are the result. A man who once tried to kill Mitchell asks to meet with him, unveiling a conspiracy involving a rogue commander in the Indian navy working with Russian nuclear designs to create weapons that could change the landscape of the world. Mitchell is forced to trust his former enemy if he is going to foil the plot. Bond uses the fear of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands to good effect here. His military background adds authenticity to the story and brings the horror home. Clancy fans should already have Bond on their reading list, and this is one of his best yet.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
