      In Abbott's hypercharged ninth thriller (after 2005's Panic
      ), Miles Kendrick, a former spy for the mob who's now in the federal witness protection program, has built a new if fragile life in Sante Fe, N.Mex. With the aid of Allison Vance, his psychiatrist, Kendrick struggles to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder, which developed after he killed his best friend while assisting the FBI. Kendrick is soon overwhelmed by more feelings of guilt when his shrink is blown up in her office after asking him to help her with a delicate matter. Kendrick later discovers Vance was involved with a new miracle drug touted as curing PTSD. In his search for the drug, which takes a bewildering series of twists and turns, he crosses paths with a number of unsavory characters with various motives. Readers will need to suspend some disbelief as the body count mounts, but few who start this book will stop turning the pages.

      If there was a drug that allowed people to forget the worst moment of their lives, how far would someone go to obtain it, given the potential profit? Such a drug, code-named Frost, lies at the heart of Abbott's latest novel. Miles Kendrick is in the federal witness protection program and also undergoing therapy for post-traumatic stress syndrome, a condition manifested by his being haunted by the "ghost" of his best friend, Andy. When his therapist is blown up in her office, Miles finds himself being pursued, along with two other PTS patients, by several deadly factions, each of whom erroneously believes that the trio possesses the priceless Frost. Ganser delivers a strong performance as narrator. His characterizations, especially the ruthless yet oddly sympathetic hit-man, Groot, and the annoying but funny phantom, Andy, are nicely delivered. But it is his sense of pace that keeps this audiobook moving. Ganser manages to convey the excitement, suspense and urgency of Abbott's thriller, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats through every chase and narrow escape. Recovering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Miles is suddenly swept into new fears as two more PTSD patients come into the story. Together, the three must overcome their phobias to find a cure for their ills. We have to understand Miles's world quickly, for it changes almost as fast as Ganser describes it. Just as we come to believe in Miles's tender, troubled therapist, Dr. Alison Vance, she's murdered--and Miles flees one nightmare only to find villains and new terrors waiting in the next. S.W.       Rick Zief's raspy voice is just perfect as he portrays Miles "Mike" Kendrick, who is suffering from PTSD and is also in the Witness Protection Program. He believes he's killed his best friend--though the friend sees and talks to him everywhere Mike goes. The plot gets weird as Mike's psychiatrist is blown up, and Mike is stalked by a hit man. It turns out, Kendrick, the hit man, and two other people suffering from PTSD are searching for a drug that is a potential cure. It's a complicated story with a slew of interesting characters, and Zief makes the most of them. As the book speeds towards an ending, Zief appropriately picks up the pace.
