An explosive new science fiction series by New York Times best-selling author Kevin J. Anderson, Hidden Empire is the first volume in The Saga of the Seven Suns, modeled after the Star Wars and X-Files universes. Anderson has become the foremost science fiction writer of the century, bringing to life vivid characters and worlds that delight his fans across the galaxy. The Klikiss, a now-extinct alien civilization, left behind vast technological information that has been discovered by two xenoarchaeologists. One discovery, a device that converts gas planets into life-giving suns is quickly put to the test with unimaginable results. Arising out of the test is a new alien species that threatens every human. Mankind is left with the dim reality-either fight the new alien life form or face humiliation, death and extinction. This riveting adventure swings you from one wondrous realm to another as the Hidden Empire is sought after and exposed. Anderson has created a gripping beginning to what will surely be his best series yet. George Guidall has returned a stellar performance and brought these characters to life in vivid detail.

The ever reliable George Guidall immerses himself in Anderson's new science fiction series, creatively voicing a variety of characters that includes humans, aliens, and robots. Guidall's relaxed, understated style nevertheless offers a wide range of well-drawn vocal characterizations that complement but never distract from the action at hand. The story itself, about a mysterious alien species suddenly attacking from nowhere and forcing the human and nonhuman species of the future to work together to repel the invaders, is a sort of user-friendlier DUNE. That is, it has much of the same complexity in its anthropological details but moves along at a much zippier pace. J.P.M. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine

Starred review from July 1, 2002
In this stellar launch of a new series, bestseller Anderson (Dune
      spinoffs with Brian Herbert; X-Files
      and Star Wars
books) delivers action, engaging characters and credible fantastic worlds in spades—or ekti, the fuel vital for spaceships in the year 2427. The Terran Hanseatic League, in a heady rush of manifest destiny, turns Oncier, a huge gas planet, into a sun so its four moons can be used for colonization. In the process, the Terrans disturb the ancient but dwindling Ildirans, their uneasy allies, whose leader, the Mage-Imperator, suspects that Terrans are far too eager to take over the spiral arm. Still worse, by inadvertently destroying Oncier's hitherto unknown colonists, the powerful hydrogues, the conversion of Oncier sets off a catastrophic conflict that threatens the existence of all Terrans and Ildirans. The Earth Defense Forces of the Terran Hanseatic League, the Worldtrees and Green Priests of Theroc, the gypsy Roamers who mine ekti—all must unite with the Ildirans to fight the alien menace. Book one sizzles with a fast-moving plot woven tightly with vivid characterizations: the space cowboys Jess, Ross and Tasia Tamblyn; the exotic Ildirans; the grotesque Mage-Imperator and his handsome Prime Designate son, Jora'h; Beneto Theron, his clan and the bewitching Nira Khali; the appealing and not-so-appealing humans, Raymond/Peter and Chairman Basil Wenceslas; and many others, all conspiring to make this fascinating future epic one not to be missed. Agent, Matt Bialer. (July 24)Forecast:With rights already sold to the U.K. and Germany, plus blurbs from Brian Herbert, Margaret Weis, R.A. Salvatore and other big SF/fantasy guns, Anderson could finally have a series to rival his franchise fiction.
