An absolute necessity for design devotees and sneakerheads of all ages! Sneakers is a definitive exploration of the cultural phenomenon of sneakers, now an 85-billion-dollar-a-year industry. This gift-worthy book features 320 pages of photos and interviews with industry gurus, sports legends, and celebrities in a stunning package created by celebrated designer Rodrigo Corral.

The book's carefully-curated list of participants takes readers to the center of the action. Edson Sabajo, owner of Amsterdam's seminal sneaker boutique, Patta, leads a sneaker hunt that starts in the back-alleys of Philadelphia and ends in the Middle East. Jeff Staple, designer of a pair of sneakers that resells for $6000, recalls the sneaker riot his design kicked off on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 2005. Jim Riswold dishes on making commercials with Michael Jordan. Ronnie Fieg explains the collaborative magic of KITH. Adidas's Rachel Muscat and Jon Wexler get philosophical about their star collaborator, Kanye West. Nike's legendary Tinker Hatfield takes a glimpse into the future. Professional tennis player Serena Williams shares an exclusive reveal. And much, much more. From its arresting cover design and thought-provoking interiors to the unprecedented depth of its first-person accounts, Sneakers is an absolute must-have for sneaker lovers and anyone who is interested in design, creative process, street culture, branding, entrepreneurship, art and fashion.

Readers who care deeply about kicks will dive into these three- to five-page long interviews collected by Corral (creative director, Farrar, Straus & Giroux), Alex French (contributing editor, Esquire), and Howie Kahn (contributing editor, Wall St. Journal), highlighting 54 key people in the community of sneaker designers, manufacturers, and trendsetters. Readers who don't know their Yeezys from their Consortium NMDs will still enjoy browsing the footwear photographs (all shapes, sizes, and colors) and meeting the interview subjects (mostly men, hip, and under 40). VERDICT Not a necessary purchase but a shelf-brightener where budgets allow.

Grades 9-12 For the almost 60 designers, marketers, store owners, bloggers, and artists featured in this unique book, buying sneakers wasn't just a back-to-school event but a way of life. Short profiles based on interviews highlight the essence of sneaker culture, from each individual's gateway sneaker to a career in the sneaker industry. While a few names, such as Kobe Bryant and Serena Williams, may be instantly recognizable, readers will take more interest in the diverse men and women who have turned dreams of designing and selling sneakers into reality. In each case, there's a sincere respect for the sneaker as a perfect blend of engineering, art, and pop culture. The varying graphic design, which, of course, plays with images of sneakers, keeps the artwork as fresh as the text. Fashion designers and artists seem the obvious audience for this niche book, but engineers and entrepreneurs will also find inspiration. Although marketed as YA, the sophisticated text may have wider appeal to adult readers. Those who make the leap will find a lot of soleand soul.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)

This coffee-table theme book covers the fashion, art, and culture of sneakers through the eyes of dozens of fashion professionals, athletes, and more, many of whom are not widely known to the general public. Abundant color photos and graphics accompany the narratives in a chaotic but stylish scrapbook-like design. For a niche group of teen readers, here's everything one would want to know about sneaks.
