The Return: Midnight is the seventh book in L.J. Smith's New York Times bestselling Vampire Diaries series.

Elena Gilbert is back from the Dark Dimension, having successfully freed her vampire boyfriend Stefan Salvatore from imprisonment. Saving Stefan had an unlikely consequence: his vampire brother Damon Salvatore has become mortal. While the trio reels from this latest twist, they must still deal with the demons that have taken over Elena's hometown, Fell's Church. But the battle will take Elena, Stefan, and Damon to their darkest moments yet...

The Return: Midnight is perfect for fans of the hit CW TV show The Vampire Diaries, as well as fans of the original New York Times bestselling series who can't wait to see what happens next with Elena, Stefan, and Damon.

PreS-Gr 1-When Mama Duck's recalcitrant egg finally hatches, everyone finds the baby's sharp claws, large teeth, and swooshing tail a puzzling sight. Realizing he is different, the ugly duckling heads out into his prehistoric world. There, after trying to make friends with lizards, turtles, and other creatures, he comes upon Mother Tyrannosaurus rex, who welcomes him home. This unusual takeoff on a much-retold Andersen tale is hampered by overly exaggerated facial expressions and harsh colors. However, if read aloud, the dialogue and variant font styles (some in color) may give rise to vocal responses-especially from dinosaur enthusiasts. Of more interest may be the appended two-page author's note that includes scientific paintings and information about the dinosaurs, flora, and fauna mentioned in the story. However, young children will probably need adult interpretation to understand the back matter.-Barbara Elleman, Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA

Elena, her vampire boyfriend, Stefan, and their friends race to stop Japanese fox-demons from turning their town's children and parents against one another in a catastrophic "Last Midnight." Illicit love interest Damon has unwillingly been made human; his desperation to re-attain vampirism may jeopardize everything. Supernatural worlds full of vampires, demons, angels, and deities collide bizarrely in this melodramatic series' latest tome.
