Years ago, it was common to train a dog through force and fear. The pendulum swung in the other direction in recent years, and contemporary trainers only use treats and positive reinforcement. California-based dog trainer Wombacher (Good Dog, Happy Baby) here presents what he calls an "integrated" approach, which uses almost exclusively positive training but does call on avoidance or compulsion-based exercises when needed, such as in case of emergency. This is not a "new puppy" book--no discussion of housebreaking, crating, socialization, or the like. Instead, Wombacher clearly and succinctly presents exercises designed to help readers teach dogs the basics: to sit, stay, walk (heel), leave it, come, lie down. For dogs who respond to treats, Wombacher describes using high-value snacks to motivate dogs learning the basics and keep them interested and enthusiastic. In the following sections, Wombach reworks each training exercise and its instructions for dogs who respond better to balls or toys, and dogs who only respond to leash training. The excellent black-and-white photos accompanying each exercise are helpful and clear. VERDICT For readers seeking a get-it-done training manual, this inexpensive, thorough guidebook offers exceptional guidance without a lot of distraction. Appropriate for all audiences.--Susan Riley, formerly at Mamaroneck P.L., NY
