The Norse pantheon comes alive in this edifying introduction to heathenry by Daimler (Odin). The author, a witch, offers an overview of the gods, history, and beliefs of Norse heathen mythology, including the immense tree Yggdrasil that holds up the nine worlds; Ragnarök, the prophesied end of the world; and “wyrd,” a concept roughly equivalent to fate. The author notes that, though “heathenry is a diverse spiritual movement” and religious rituals are flexible among practitioners, all rituals involve reciprocity in honoring the gods and providing offerings: “Things should be in balance and... therefore a gift requires a gift in return.” Encyclopedic descriptions provide background on the many gods known collectively as the Aesir and on related spirits, such as the Valkyries that transport dead warriors to Valhalla and the Norns that influence one’s luck. The author also advises on how to live out heathenry’s values, suggesting that one act with honor, learn about one’s ancestors, and devote a place in one’s home to praising the gods. Daimler does a commendable job of covering key concepts with the verve of a hip professor, though some may be disappointed by the brevity of her treatment of modern heathenry. Newcomers to the tradition would do well to start here.
