Twenty-four authors--curanderas, educators, healers, hoodoo practitioners, professors, witches, and more--offer essays on folk traditions across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Edited by folklorist Hutcheson (host of the podcast New World Witchery), the collection is organized by country and region. Hutcheson provides introductions to each region, supplying glossaries, places to visit, and recommended reading. The essays delve into historical and contemporary practices, key stories and beliefs, and where and how to learn more. Hutcheson notes that he consciously chose not to include Indigenous practices here, as they are so wide-ranging as to deserve their own book overseen by an Indigenous editor. VERDICT This work offers an interesting introduction to a variety of traditions, supporting readers as they decide which beliefs and suggestions to explore further.
