Clara and Daniel were drawn together when children by their shared passion for music, although she was the much-fted daughter of a wealthy and influential minister living in upscale Bolton Hill, and he was the son of a steel-mill worker from Baltimores poverty-stricken East End. Years later in 1879, their paths cross again when Clara, newly returned from London, seeks to make peace between Daniel and Alfred Forsythe, an influential mill owner against whom Daniel has sworn undying vengeance, but unwittingly causes more trouble. Complicating matters, young Alexander Banebridge, a vicious crime lords heir apparent who is assigned the task of destroying Daniels business, targets Clara as one of Daniels weaknesses.
