      Recently widowed Baroness Eleanora Coventry must raise her husband's newly legitimized daughter Amelia and her own sullen son Edward, so she moves them to the countryside to avoid London gossip. Nurturing two traumatized children, Nora feels overwhelmed and is terrified that Edward will be removed from her custody, as her late husband's will gave control of their son's upbringing to a solicitor. When she seeks riding lessons for her children, she meets stablemaster Ridley Ellis, who has a way with horses and a genteel, patient manner. Ridley manages to gain the trust and respect of Nora and her children, both of whom become more at peace thanks to Ridley's generosity. Nora begins to risk propriety to get closer to Ridley, while Ridley wonders if his love and long-held secret will be safe with Nora, before high society tears them apart. VERDICT Wright (A Captain for Caroline Gray) will win over many romance aficionados with characters who mature and become more self-aware throughout this chaste but tender romantic tale.--Eve Stano

      Wright's latest is a lovely gift for readers who enjoy romance with an emphasis on genuinely good people developing a deep, meaningful romantic relationship. At 27, Eleanora Coventry is, finally, free to make choices. Married off at 16 to a baron who so controlled her life she wasn't even allowed to raise her son. Now widowed, she retrieves her 10-year-old son from boarding school and, as stipulated in her late husband's will, takes in his orphaned daughter, the outcome of an adulterous liaison. They all move to their country manor. Her husband left her nothing, and his odious solicitor has control over her son's future and inheritance. At Windsong Manor, Ridley Ellis, a stable hand with hidden depths and dangerous secrets, is kind to the children and surreptitiously protects the horses and workers from the drunken stable master. As Eleanora seeks to raise her son to value humanity over avarice and to be sure her adopted daughter feels loved and respected, she's in danger of losing everything. Wright's Proper Romance Regency tale has wide appeal.
