Humorous, macabre, bizarre--this diverse collection of short stories from the ever reliable Faye Kellerman is as the title suggests, delightful. The accomplished narrators whose voices complement the various stories amuse, ensnare, and mesmerize, leaving the listener riveted. In particular, Danielle Ferland's rendition of "Bonding," a story of incest, is fascinating, repulsive, and ultimately hypnotic, while her reading of "Malibu Dog," the story of a pit bull with an abusive owner, manages to combine humor and suspense, leaving the listener grimly satisfied as a swift, ironic justice is dispensed. This fascinating collection of engaging performances will captivate listeners and have them clamoring for more. M.H.N. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine -

Bestseller Kellerman's hardcore fans will welcome this eclectic volume, whose 17 selections include two new tales about her series husband-and-wife team, LAPD Lt. Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus; two stories with family themes, one coauthored with Kellerman's two daughters ("The Luck of the Draw"); and a pair of autobiographical essays, one a poignant tribute to her late father ("The Summer of My Womanhood"). Kellerman's short stories may lack the intricate plotting of her novels (Stone Kiss
, etc.), but a typical effort like the title story, in which Decker notices some things out of place when a friend dies of an apparent heart attack, is never less than entertaining. Brief comments at the start of each entry provide context. -

This lightweight collection of short stories by a bestselling mystery novelist is given substance by a stellar cast of readers. Two of the stories feature Kellerman's well-known husband-and-wife sleuths, LAPD Lt. Peter Drucker and his wife, Rina Lazarus. In another story, "The Luck of the Draw," there are revelations about what happens to a family that wins the lottery. The story, which Kellerman wrote with her two young daughters, is given a raucous interpretation by Lindsay Crouse and Nancy McKeon. The outstanding chiller, written by Kellerman with her son, a playwright, combines family and evil. Roger Rees's wicked account of terrifying mother-son devotion is not something to listen to at bedtime. M.T.B. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine -

"The Garden of Eden", a collection of 18 short stories, is a delight. Many of them, varying in theme and genre, have been published previously in anthologies or magazines. Several Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus mysteries are included as well as a "Jack the Ripper"-type tale called "Mummy and Jack." "Holy Water" is a humorous story about a rabbi who is kidnapped because he knows the secret formula of a cola soft drink. The last piece is Kellerman's moving biographical reminiscence of her beloved father. The narration by various readers, expertly capturing accents and age differences, adds an extra dimension to the varied characters, be they teenagers, inexperienced kidnappers, psychopathic killers, or sage religious leaders. Highly recommended for public libraries.Ilka Gordon, Park Synagogue Lib., Pepper Pike, OHCopyright 2007 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.
