A moving picture book highlighting a young Muslim boy's efforts to rediscover his family's history in the World Wars.

Muhammad wants to take part in his school's assembly to honor veterans, but no one in his community, let alone his family, has been involved in the World Wars . . . have they? After discussions with his family and elders at his mosque, Muhammad starts to piece together his family's lost history, and realizes that you don't need a trophy or medal to remember those you've lost–it can be as simple as sharing a piece of roti.

With beautiful, detailed illustrations of historical scenes and Muhammad's mosque, this is a tender and compassionate story of the importance of passing on memories and experiences through generations, especially of those who have been largely erased from mainstream narratives. A note from the author and other backmatter provide further historical context on Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu soldiers who served in the World Wars.

Grades K-3 Muhammad's class is preparing for a Remembrance Day (known as Veteran's Day in the U.S.) assembly where they will share family stories from serving in the military. Muhammad feels left out since none of his family has ever mentioned being in a war. However, a trip to visit his grandfather and their mosque reveals that Muhammad's family (who lived in northern India at the time) served with the British during the Great War, where they befriended fellow soldiers by sharing their delicious roti (flat bread). Ahmad's evocative story successfully addresses several themes: being excluded by a dominant culture, the ways in which colonialism can impede the transmission of history, and the importance of sharing culture for acceptance and understanding. Shruti Prabhu's colorful illustrations predominantly feature browns, greens, and oranges to realistically portray Muhammad's diverse classroom and the many activities at his mosque. Appended with a roti recipe and a note about South Asian participation in WWI and the Partition of India, this provides an inclusive look at Remembrance Day celebrations.
