This year more than 1 million Americans will have a heart attack or stroke, making heart disease the leading cause of death in men and women in this country. But thanks to his aggressive prevention approach to treating heart disease, renowned cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the Agatston Score for measuring coronary calcium, rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice.
Now in his most passionate book yet, Dr. Agatston champions a revolution in cardiac care that will empower people to save their own lives.
Just as millions of people have successfully adopted Dr. Agatston’s South Beach Diet, now millions can lead longer and healthier lives thanks to his South Beach Heart Pogram. Living without heart disease is clearly within our reach.

The creator of the South Beach Diet is a passionate believer that medication, diet, and lifestyle changes can eliminate heart attacks and strokes. Called aggressive prevention, his approach is based on current research that shows how various blood components are related to arterial blockages. The author writes with gentle conviction, often adding personal history and insights. Yet he doesn't pull any punches when describing the economic forces that discourage cost-effective preventive approaches like this. Stephen Hoye's interpretation is astute and balanced; he gives the ideas added credibility as he speaks with relaxed authority. Printable menus, exercises, and illustrations are a helpful bonus. T.W. Reading a seamless abridgment of his well-organized prescription for preventing cardiovascular disease, the author sounds like a doctor. In other words, he reads aloud competently enough, but without the verve or inviting tone of a more experienced narrator. Still, he's earnest and enunciates clearly as he describes research on what clogs and unclogs arteries, and how to prevent a variety of other cardiovascular diseases. Organized for a general audience, the writing is accessible, and Agatston's personal stories and insights are motivating. Diet and exercise are part of his plan, along with state-of-the-art medical tests, if necessary, and a review with one's doctor of possible medicine or supplements. The program contains meal plans, exercises, and illustrations. T.W. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
