McNeil's meandering epic has been a cult favorite since she began self-publishing it in 1996, garnering both acclaim and awards. Its convoluted plot is notoriously tricky, but for those who appreciate layered stories, off-beat characters, and thought-provoking sf, Finder will be a revelation. As the main character, Jaeger, wanders through a futuristic world, interacting most often with his sometime girlfriend Rachel, her three children, and their estranged, abusive father, McNeil creates opportunities to comment on consumerism, ethnicity, family, identity, and more. Fans will enjoy this new omnibus edition, which collects the first 22 issues and adds a nice selection of cover art. Those new to the series will appreciate the chance to start Jaeger's tale from the beginning and find some navigational aid in the endnotes, which comment on the story and offer glimpses into McNeil's creative process. Anchored by vibrant black-and-white art that breathes with life, Finder may be a niche title, but it's an important one.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
