McLaughlin’s superlative, powerful, fast-paced third Sons of Steel Row contemporary (after Dare to Stay) follows undercover DEA agent Scotty Donahue on his years-long case to rid Boston’s Steel Row neighborhood of the Bitter Hill gang. After he participates in a charity auction event, Scotty is unexpectedly enthralled by smart, beautiful med student Skylar Daniels, who likewise wants to give him all her attention. She’s the sister of the gang’s leader, so Scotty tries his best to stifle his attraction, but she’s a determined woman who goes after what she wants, and she wants him. His restraint is put to the ultimate test when his bosses order him to keep a watch on her. McLaughlin continues to capture the harshness of gang and undercover life, and cleverly follows up with previous characters while introducing new ones. As the stakes rise, Scotty has to decide where his loyalties lie, and Skylar struggles with a secret of her own. Life-changing truths are revealed, sexual tension cuts like a blade, and complex characterization and expert dialogue enhance the winning plot. This novel will leave readers breathless.
