Nicole Jordan's irresistible Legendary Lovers series continues in this sizzling twist on My Fair Lady, as a bewitching beauty and a rakish sea captain trade favors . . . and tempt fate. Lady Katherine Wilde believes she has crushed any lingering romantic feelings toward Brandon Deverill, who spurned her six years ago. And now that the rough-edged rogue needs polishing to claim his inheritance, she's willing to strike a practical bargain: Kate will mold the brash privateer into an acceptable English nobleman if Deverill will safeguard her from brigands on a voyage to recover lost family treasure. However, the soul-melting kiss that seals their agreement just may reignite blazing passion. Brandon's fortitude was sorely tested when he turned Kate away from his bed all those years ago. Even a rake such as he wouldn't seduce an innocent beauty before sailing into battle. But now that he's inherited a title and must take a suitable bride, he sets his sights on Kate. Though he fiercely desires her, true love is a notion that baffles him-until their adventure turns perilous and Brandon realizes he'd gladly trade his life to save the woman who has captured his heart.

Narrator Beverley A. Crick brings the listener back to 1800s England, where sparks fly between Lady Katherine Wilde and Brandon Deverill. Deverill, an American privateer, has just inherited a British title. He and Lady Katherine share a past, and she agrees to help him find a wife. Crick gives Deverill a flat American accent and the other characters a rich British accent. The pair travel to France on a quest involving Lady Katherine's past, and Crick succeeds with the French accents as well. Listeners will appreciate the distinct voice given to each character while enjoying the story's blossoming romance. S.B. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine

Jordan’s fifth Legendary Lovers Regency romance (after The Art of Taming a Rake), a gender-swapped take on My Fair Lady, is a beautifully crafted adventure filled with passion and peril. When Brandon Deverill was 27, he cruelly rejected 18-year-old Lady Katharine Wilde. Six years later, they’re reunited, but purely for practical purposes: Brandon, a merchant and former privateer, needs someone noble to transform him into a gentleman and find him a wife, and Kate needs someone seaworthy to guard her on a dangerous voyage to France. Jordan cleverly weaves backstory into the couple’s reunion, effectively contrasting their actions and entertaining banter with their secret thoughts and feelings. The dialogue is consistently period-accurate and amplifies the contrast between forbidden lust and the mask of chivalry and respectability beneath which it hides. As passion rises, so does danger, for their journey brings Brandon face-to-face with a former nemesis, Jean Louvel. Readers will savor this splendid installment of a consistently strong series.
