Ever wonder what happens when the world is on the brink of collapse, while aliens are collecting seeds and secretly procreating with humans? That's the premise of Nocenti's latest, focusing on Lola, a human, who's in love with Race, an alien visiting Earth in order to harvest seeds before the planet dies. Race's fellow aliens don't approve of his relationship with Lola, and they ask him to dispose of her. But this is problematic because he loves her, too. The plot focuses primarily on Lola and Race and the consequences of their love, and while there are several subplots around the story of their relationship, they are confusing enough to make this hard to follow at times. Aja's stark artwork, in a limited palette of gray, black, and white and full of murky shadows, cultivates an atmosphere matching the grim narrative. Still, readers who appreciate particularly character-driven, dystopian sci-fi and distinctive art styles will find something to like here.
