Grades K-2 The competitive rabbit from I Will Race You through This Book! (2019) returns with another zany metafictional challenge. Sporting shiny yellow-and-red high-top sneakers, Book-It Bunny brings new kicks and tricks to this speed-reading sprint. Peppy rhyming couplets propel the action: "Here I go! I hit my stride. / LOOK DOWN! Why are your shoes untied?" Book-It launches more wily diversions, including a banana-peel projectile, "scary thing" warning, and souped-up "SUPER TURBO BLAST" shoe modification. When all attempts to prevent the reader from crossing the finish line first backfire, the bunny offers a sly clarification and assurance of a rematch. Geisel Honor Book creator Fenske's sprightly cartoon illustrations are full of hilarious expressions, from mischievous glints in Book-It Bunny's eyes to knowing glances from a watchful snail. Onomatopoeic sound effects ("SPROING!", "RUMBLE!") and close-up sneaker details ("SUPERSNEAK RUBBER") provide more opportunities to hone reading skills. With superb comedic pacing, a large font, sight words, and sight gags aplenty, this is a winning choice for beginning readers.COPYRIGHT(2022) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

K-Gr 2-Book-It Bunny is back and ready to race through this entertaining reader in her new fancy super shoes. She challenges a snail to a race across the book. "And with my brand-new Super Shoes there is no way that I can lose!" But she gets distracted several times along the way. Much like the tortoise and the hare, the slower animal wins. She blames her shoes, but vows to try harder tomorrow. The text is in large blocks, rhymes, and is easy to read; there aren't many words that beginning readers would need help with. Illustrations are simple and fun, similar in style and layout to Mo Willems's "Elephant & Piggie" books. VERDICT A fun beginning reader that fans of the first Book-It Bunny book will read over and over.-Kristin J. Anderson
