Denmark, 2018. Cecilie is clearing out her grandmother Inger's cellar when she comes across a box of jewelry that she links to one of Inger's recent correspondence, and Cecilie reaches out to make the return. She meets David Nathan, and his carer finds a notebook hidden in the jewelry box. The narrative then goes back in time to Denmark, 1943. Inger has gone to live with her aunt and uncle to work in a book bindery. There, she becomes involved in moving identity papers and illegal newspapers as her way of contributing to the resistance. Her cousin, Gudrun, is also partaking in the resistance by helping her fisherman fianc transport Jews to Switzerland. Their friend Bodil finds herself accused of being a collaborator for befriending a German soldier. Each young woman puts herself in dangerous situations. Risks are taken, secrets told, and lives are lost in this novel of courage, friendship, love, and bravery.COPYRIGHT(2023) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
