Author (Zen Baggage; Road to Heaven: Encounters with Chinese Hermits) and acclaimed translator Porter traveled from the mouth to the source of China's Yellow River--the sixth longest in the world. The 3,000-mile journey encompasses China's cradle of civilization. Chapter titles range from one-word geographical names like "Kaifeng" or "Loyang," while others, such as "Stone Buddhas" or "Historians and Sages" are more descriptive. Porter's writing is charmingly old-fashioned and he doesn't take himself too seriously, traits that seem to gain him entry into glittering parties in Shanghai or the residence of Master K'uang, one of China's most famous living Taoist masters. Readers will enjoy Porter's gentle humor, too. The 43 quirky black-and-white photographs (one depicts a little boy on a river boat who's wearing opera makeup) are presented contact-sheet style, with "AGFA Apx 100" and specific photo numbers.
