The Power of Ashtanga Yoga
Developing a Practice That Will Bring You Strength, Flexibility, and Inner Peace—Includes the complete Primary Series
Go inside the philosophy, history, and practices of a popular and athletic type of yoga—with step-by-step instructions and gems of wisdom for starting your own journey to self-realization
Ashtanga Yoga has become extremely popular in recent years. Here, Kino MacGregor—a disciple of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the great modern guru who developed Ashtanga Yoga—gives a comprehensive view of the practice, demonstrating how Ashtanga is fundamentally a path of spiritual transformation and personal development.
MacGregor delves into the history and tradition of Ashtanga Yoga and reveals how its philosophy manifests in contemporary lifestyle and dietary choices. She also explains the essential connection of breath, posture, and gaze that is the core of the practice. Her clear, step-by-step instruction of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series—including standing, seated, backbending, twisting, hip-opening, and closing postures—is a wonderful initiation for those who are new to the practice, and it will motivate experienced yogis toward perfection of the form. Throughout, MacGregor shares her own personal yoga journey and her devotion to yoga as a path of self-realization in a way that will inspire all practitioners.

With the rising popularity of yoga, instructional books abound and choosing the right one can be a daunting task. MacGregor follows up her memoir (Sacred Fire: My Journey into Ashtanga Yoga) with this inspiring guide. Beginners will relate to the author's initial frustrations, struggles with the poses, and feelings of self-doubt. Detailed instruction is given on how to overcome these obstacles and develop a daily practice of the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. MacGregor explains how to practice asanas six days a week using the Tristana Method, a threefold approach consisting of breathing technique (Ujjayi Pranayama), single-pointed gaze (Drishti), and pose. She also discusses the importance of the Ashtanga yoga diet and argues that, inevitably, foods that are harmful to the body impede yoga practice. Ayurvedic guidelines and methods for cleansing the body are given. MacGregor introduces the spiritual philosophy of yoga that moves the practice beyond a series of stretches while also providing written and photographic instruction on executing postures. VERDICT This book is a must-have for all yoga enthusiasts. It provides valuable information for a complete practice on all levels. The author is well versed in Ashtanga and has the distinction of receiving certification to teach it from founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. An engaging and highly recommended read.--Ajoke Kokodoko, Oakland P.L.
