We all love romcoms. They keep us on the edge of our seats, waiting for the two leads to fall madly in love. But what you may not realize is that they often contain profound feminist messages that have the power to re-shape how we think about sexism and women's rights.
In this fascinating guide, movie journalist and Bechdel Test Fest founder Corrina Antrobus reveals how romcoms reflect feminism in the modern age. These iconic, groundbreaking movies have shone a spotlight or shifted narratives on topics from body positivity to abortion, and from faking orgasms to workplace equality.
Antrobus discusses all the best feminist moments, big and small, in romcoms through the ages, including:

  • When Harry Met Sally, which broke taboos around faking orgasms
  • 10 Things I Hate About You, which embraced female rebellion
  • Mamma Mia!, which sang in the face of slut shaming
  • My Best Friend's Wedding, which showed us it's OK to be irrational
  • Clueless, which proved women can be fashionable, feminine, and feminist!
  • Bridesmaids, which brought female-powered comedy to the forefront of Hollywood

British film critic Antrobus offers a book that celebrates rom-com movies. She argues that romantic comedies and relationship-focused movies are not just guilty pleasures; they often have much to say about sexism, feminism, and various societal issues and pressures. With accompanying bright, playful illustrations from VulgaDrawings (created by Lily O'Farrell), this book serves up mini-essays on the positive and boundary-pushing elements of 100 romance films whose release dates span 1922 to today. Antrobus covers rom-com standards and classic Hollywood films as well as queer cinema and non-American productions; among the 100 movies are When Harry Met Sally, While You Were Sleeping, His Girl Friday, The Watermelon Woman, and Barakah Meets Barakah. For a few titles on the list, Antrobus has stretched the definition of rom-com to fit them under the umbrella, but her central points are solid and will resonate with fans of the genre. VERDICT A colorful, breezy collection that will give rom-com lovers a passel of new titles to check out while also encouraging them to take a closer look at the elements that make up their familiar favorites.--Kathleen McCallister
